What is Rapé Mai Joshin?
The Mai Joshin Rapé blend is named after the Quechua words for the city of Pucallpa, one of the major ayahuasca retreat center hotspots in Peru. Once a Shipibo village, this is now a vital economic hub for the Shipibo-Conibo ethnic group. The name itself means ‘red earth’ and likely refers to the lateritic red soil exposed by the river and deforestation.
Mai Joshin contains shihuahuaco (Dipteryx micrantha) and capirona (Calycophyllum spruceanum).
Shihuahuaco is an important tree in Peruvian shamanism, as well as one of the oldest and tallest tree species in the Amazon. The Ese’Eja indigenous community consider it a powerful Plant Teacher and mix it with Banisteriopsis for use in shamanic rituals. It is said to be able to strengthen the healer's energy and provide protection against evil spirits during the healing session.
Capirona is another giant Amazonian tree used in medicinal and ceremonial purposes. Therapeutically, it’s used to treat fungal infections, cuts, wounds, and burns on the skin, eye infections, and diabetes. It also serves as an insect repellent and for soothing insect bites. In ayahuasca ceremonies, shamans are said to invoke the spirit of the capirona tree in order to bring peace and protection to the space in which participants are sharing the experience.
